Heroes sometimes have major character flaws to overcome, known as Hubrises. Hubrises are Negative traits a Character may have that can be activated by the other players or GM using any Tragic Destiny die remaining in the pool, the severity determined by the value of the die. The Hero who’s Hubris was activated then gets to keep the Destiny die to use later. These are the various Hubrises suitable for selection by a player character. Each Hubris has a brief description listed below. It’s up to whoever activates the hubris to convince the DM or table why the Hubris is relevant to the circumstance in question. The DM must approve all Hubris activations.

You crave power. Money is nice, but being in charge of other people is your favorite thing. You often chase after power, even if the deal you are getting is risky.

You enjoy arguing, even over trivial matters, even when it’s inappropriate. If you get bored, you start an argument. You often find fault where none exists, and exaggerate minor defects into tragic flaws.

You firmly believe that you are better than anyone else is. Your ideas are the best, your clothes are the most stylish, and you have to let everyone else know how much better you are.

You irrationally despise an entire group or even groups of people. Pick a group of people, it can be based on nationality, species, religion, or even their profession, but for whatever reason, good or bad, you hate members of this group. The nicest, most generous, most intelligent person in the world is still despised if they are “one of them.”

The truth is only a canvas on which you craft a magnificent portrait of things as they should have been. If you see an opportunity to glorify your deeds, family’s heritage, or anything else that might draw attention to you, you do so. You don’t mean to do anything wrong, of course; after all, everyone exaggerates

You are a bully, if you think someone is weaker, dumber, uglier, or just less than you in some way, you will go out of your way to be cruel to them. Regardless of your surroundings, if you find someone who seems an easy target you will often go to great lengths to prove to them you think they are your inferior.

You never seem to get things right, and are always messing things up. So what if the knot wasn’t tied tight enough and you fell asleep on watch, it’s not like the bad guys are going to get free and kill you in your sleep.

To you peace is for weaklings, and the only thing in life that means anything is a good fight. When an enemy offers a surrender, you don't take it. When an enemy offers an opportunity for peace, you scorn it. The more dedicated someone is toward pacifism and diplomatic solutions, the angrier and more explosive your reaction.

You have a strong sense of self preservation. You often hesitate to put yourself at risk, even if there’s good reason to do so.

You swear, like a lot, but that’s ok because you don’t have any manners anyway. You say what you want, when you want, regardless of the time or place, or even company. You often find yourself saying the most inappropriate things at the most inappropriate times.

You have a sadistic streak that causes you to perform acts of cruelty for no good reason. Of course, this doesn’t endear you to the families of your victims, or the local authorities.

You have the uncanny ability to drain all the fun out of any occasion. Whether on purpose, or just by your very nature, when you join a party, the party ends. You often find yourself spoiling the fun of friends and strangers alike, maybe not even being aware that you did so.

You lie, not because you want to or even like doing it, your just a liar. Sometimes you lie even when there isn’t a need to.

People find you nauseating. Maybe you smell bad, maybe you chew with your mouth open, or maybe it’s the collection of fingers you take from your fallen enemies. Whatever it is, people do not like being around you, and will often find an excuse to move as far away from you as possible.

You have a goal, and nothing will stop you from achieving it. This focus can sometimes lead to you doing things you would rather not, but all that matters is you reaching your goal.

Everyone else seems to have it better than you do. They have more money, better toys, and a prettier wife. Sometimes you covet something belonging to someone else so much, you must attempt to get it for yourself.

You enjoy living in the lap of luxury. Only the finest things in life are good enough for you. You often focus on your own comfort instead of your job or plans.

You are a true believer. Pick something, you believe in this thing so seriously that it endangers yourself and those around you. If you are convinced that the thing you believe in wants you to take a particular course of action, you will stop at nothing to complete it.

Money makes your eyes light with joy. You can never have enough gold or possessions. Sometimes you attempt to get more than your fair share of treasure or some other reward, or you push for more money when being paid or bribed.

You party too much, drink too much, and eat too much. You have trouble resisting an invitation to join someone in a drink and sometimes shirk your duty if offered a more enjoyable time elsewhere.

You have a chip on your shoulder, a big one. Your fuse is short, and you’re ready to get in a scuffle or argument at the slightest hint of an insult. You often fly off the handle and lose your temper.

Your mind has a habit of drifting off at inopportune moments. It flits from one thought to the next so fast that you have trouble getting it to concentrate on the here and now.

You have been known to hesitate when faced with difficult choices or split-second decisions. If forced to choose between letting an enemy escape or saving the life of a companion, you’re likely to agonize over the situation until something forces your hand.

You lack any sense of charity and hospitality. The less fortunate are to be shunned and scorned, the poor, widowed, and orphaned are to be ignored, relatives are to be treated as strangers, and strangers are enemies who should be treated with indifference, if not hostility.

There’s something about you that rubs some people the wrong way. Minor slights caused by you lead to major grudges, and enemies go to unusual lengths to harm you or exact retribution. You aren't necessarily arrogant or obnoxious, but you tend to incite your enemies, allies, and sometimes even your friends.

There is no enthusiasm for life in your life, nor even much melancholy. You’ve seen or done it all, so now you spend most of your time in a listless indifference. You're fatalistic about life, but even complaining does no good, so in times when your counsel would be useful, you're often silent.

Everything is a joke to you, or at least you try and make it that way. Maybe you just don’t take anything seriously, or maybe you just try and use humor to lighten the mood or deflect. Whatever the reason, when a situation gets awkward or grim, rest assured you will be there to make everyone uncomfortable with an ill timed joke.

You form opinions quickly and change them very slowly. You also have a tendency to judge people on their appearance. You often jump to conclusions and form an unsubstantiated opinion of someone you’ve just met, or a place or item you’ve just seen.

You have a lusty nature and a tendency to pursue the pleasures of the flesh. A pretty woman or a handsome man (however your tastes run) is an almost irresistible temptation to you.

You find it very difficult to abandon a friend, even if it’s only to get help for them. As for leaving a fallen comrade behind to die, forget it. You will often go back for fallen or endangered companions, or even refuse to leave their side in the first place.

Alcohol and other substances make for warm nights when the cold wind is blowing in from the sea, and if you get a little tipsy, well, you always have
friends to help you when you stagger, clean up your vomit, and stop you from trying to beat up someone for sneering at you. Of course, the one drawback about friends is that they’re always trying to take your wine away, so maybe you don't need them after all.

Even when you're right, you have no faith in your own decisions, and you're more than willing to change your opinion if someone questions your stance. You will most often go along with the crowd, even when you have a suspicion that what they’re doing is somehow wrong.

Sometimes you just can’t bring yourself to harm your enemies, and look for alternatives as opposed to killing them. Whether this is because you want them to live knowing you beat them, or maybe you just have a small soft spot in your heart somewhere.

Lucky breaks are something that happen to other people. Your luck isn’t terrible, it just isn’t very good. If something bad is going to happen, it's probably going to happen to you.

You honestly believe that you are doing the right thing. Sometimes, though, you have your doubts. Sometimes you doubt your actions and wind up hesitating at a crucial moment.

You tend to obsess over things, well everything really. For whatever reason, you tend to obsess on things to the point where they become distractions and hindrances. You will often find yourself wasting time doubting yourself, or redoing things because maybe you can do better this time, other times you might focus on something so much that you stop paying attention to things going on around you.

You are a ray of sunshine as dark clouds gather overhead. You try and stay positive no matter how badly things are going. You often find yourself believing that if you just keep trying you can turn a situation around no matter how bleak it really is.

Nothing is beyond your capabilities. If you wanted, you could defeat the best swordsman in the world, and surely that chasm isn’t too wide for you to leap across. You rarely have any doubts about your own capabilities.

Everything you believe, you believe as if your life depended on it. Everything you don’t believe in, you hate with a passion. You will often strongly defend one of your opinions, no matter how inappropriate the time and place.

To you war is for the weak minded, and the only thing in life that means anything is a lively debate. When an enemy attacks you, you turn the other cheek. When an enemy declares war, you scorn it. The more dedicated someone is toward fighting and combat, the more resolved you become to find a peaceful solution.

Everyone is waiting for their chance to betray you. Make sure you get rid of them before they get the chance. You are always watching for signs that a friend, an associate, or even complete strangers have betrayed, or are about to betray you.

You are a dark cloud in an otherwise sunny day. You can't seem to help being negative no matter how good things are going. You often find yourself believing that you should just stop trying and give up, no matter how well things are actually going for you.

You refuse to be anyone’s slave, especially a belief, and if others are offended in your lack of belief, tough shit. You will often find yourself belittling the beliefs of others, no matter how inappropriate the time or place, you just can't seem to help yourself.

You don’t like accepting help from others. If a gift or offer of aid smacks of charity or pity, even the slightest bit, you grow indignant and refuse it. You will often refuse offers of aid, regardless of how much you might really need it.

You have the urge to go and look when you hear a strange noise in the middle of the night. It’s not that your stupid, it’s just that sometimes that little voice that says, “What would happen if I…” gets too loud to ignore. You will often investigate something unusual, even if it looks like it might be dangerous.

You lack the emotion of fear. Unfortunately, it is often an important cue that keeps people from doing foolhardy and dangerous things. You often ignore any nagging feeling of worry or hesitation you may have when confronted with a potentially dangerous environment.

Reversed Star-crossed
The wrong people keep falling in love with you. You’re the princess who the villain falls in love with at first sight, or the hero who’s left behind him a string of broken hearted jealous women all vying for his affection. People who could be attracted to you often become infatuated with you.

The end justifies the means. You are willing to perform morally repugnant actions in order to achieve noble goals. You rarely have any doubts about the moral justifiability of your actions.

You believe that you are truly worthy of power, wealth, or fame. Those who stand in your way are simply obstacles to be removed. You will often hinder or dispose of someone who poses a threat to your quest for power, wealth, or fame.

You like big complicated plots. The more convoluted and difficult to accomplish the scheme is, the better. You rarely if ever do things the easy way. Instead you have to come up with some overly complicated plan that could easily fail.

You are lazy. Why do something your self when someone else is willing to do it for only half the cost someone already paid you to do it. You will often take the easiest way out of a given task.

You can’t stand the sight of blood and abhor violence. And crypts, how can anyone stand the smell long enough to bury the dead. You will often flee a violent or gruesome situation.

You keep falling in love with the wrong people. You’re the common soldier who falls in love with the princess at first sight, or the hero who falls for the villain’s daughter without knowing who she is. You often become infatuated with people you could be attracted to.

You don’t change your mind very often, if at all. Once you’ve decided on a course of action, you follow though no matter what. You will often ignore arguments or advice trying to sway you to a different point of view.

The world is an often wondrous place, and it is understandably filled with superstitions, but to you every minor occurrence is an omen to be interpreted and every major event is the result of some supernatural agent. As a result, you often spend half your time trying to predict the best course of action to avoid supernatural disaster, and the rest of your time overreacting to incidents you couldn’t avoid. Has one of the cows become sickly? Get rid of them all; obviously they displease the gods.

You have a problem keeping your plans to yourself. Your ideas are simply so clever that you tell them to other people, so that you can watch the astonishment creep across their faces just before they tell you how brilliant you already know you are. Far too often you will say too much, even when you know you shouldn't.

Not only do bad things happen to you, but you seem to have the subconscious desire to be a victim. Minor actions will have major and horrifying consequences for your friends and comrades. You view enduring suffering as a positive quality and wear martyrdom as the ultimate badge of honor.

You cannot tell a lie, no matter how much you want to. Even when you know it is in your best interest your conscience will often prevent you from telling a lie about something.

You don’t like to believe that other people are capable of misleading and lying to you. After all, people are basically good, right? You will often ignore any doubts you may have about another person.

You're obsessed with your appearance, and cannot face the public unless you're looking your best. You’re often jealous of anyone else with charisma and beauty, and may even plot to make sure they look bad or at the very least “know their place.”
